EU Duties on semi-finished aluminium products is a step forward in the fight against Chinese dumping practices

The European Commission announced its intention to impose provisional anti dumping duties on aluminium extrusions originating in China. A step forward in the fight against dumping initiated the 24th of August with the registration of aluminium semi-finished products imported from China.

The preliminary duties will be: from 30,4 to 38,2 % for some companies; 34,9% for the ones that cooperated in the investigation and 48% for all the ones that chose not to cooperate with the Commission’s investigation. The products subjected to duties are aluminium bars, rods, profiles (whether or not hollow), tubes, pipes; unassembled; whether or not prepared for use in structures (e.g., cut-to-length, drilled, bent, chamfered, threaded); also made from alloyed aluminium, containing not more than 99.3 % of the material.

“The EU intention marks a significant achievement for protecting the European aluminium industry and represents the willingness to support the commitment of many European extrusion companies, among them also several Italian FACE associates” states Mario Conserva Secretary- General of FACE – Federation of Aluminium Consumers in Europe – the association representing the interests of aluminium transformers and users in the EU.

“Considering the measures adopted by the United States and Canada, we were awaiting more decisive actions. From next spring FACE urges the imposition of more effective anti dumping duties to hint Chinese unfair trade. Furthermore, the Federation calls for the reinforcement of the role European aluminium may play in boosting the economic growth and sustainable development. The mentioned purpose can be easily attained by European transformers, but it is necessary to finally abrogate the 6% duty on import of raw aluminium and to recognise its environment-friendly and green qualities”, finally advocates Mr. Conserva.
