The state of the EU aluminium industry: can we save it?
01.07.2022
What is the state of the aluminium industry in Europe today?
The EU created an import tariff on raw aluminium, designed to protect European aluminium producers. The problem is, this hasn’t been effective: we’ve lost 30% of our production capacity in the last two decades.
So what’s left? Extra costs for the downstream (those who come after the producers: who transform the raw material into semi-finished or finished products). The same import tariff that was designed to protect the producers also made the raw material more costly for the downstream. Between 1 and 2 billion euros per year!
