FACE at the European Parliament: industry calls to stop the clock on CBAM
Last Wednesday, FACE joined an Informative Breakfast at the European Parliament, titled “CBAM and the Aluminium Industry in Europe”, organised by the Spanish Aluminium Association and MEP Susana Solís.
Across the countries represented (Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland and Spain) and across all sectors present, the message was unanimous: the current design of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) poses serious risks for the aluminium industry:
- No level playing field for EU producers.
- A hit to competitiveness and jobs.
- Incentives for offshoring.
- Plus: loopholes and circumvention.
Instead of providing certainty, CBAM risks adding bureaucracy, costs (4.3 billion euros annually, according to ODDO BHF Metals), and instability in relations with international partners. According to an EU Commission representative, although minor tweaks are planned, no real overhaul is expected before 2028.
The united call from industry was clear: Stop the clock.
