ALLOW INERTA, Rusal’s primary aluminium brand officially certified with a very low CO2 footprint

Aluminium producer RUSAL has announced that it has passed international verification by registering its new low-carbon footprint aluminium brand, ALLOW INERTA. The tests conducted by a branch of TÜV AUSTRIA Standards & Compliance on greenhouse gas emissions relating to the production of aluminium at the Rusal smelter in Krasnoyarsk, have in fact ascertained that the ALLOW INERTA primary metal produced with the inert anode technology and using energy renewable hydroelectric, has specific emissions of 0.01 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of metal (Scope 1 and 2), therefore at a level significantly lower than the average values of the global aluminum industry.

We would like to remind you in this regard that RUSAL is among the first companies to use inert anode technology instead of carbon anodes in the primary aluminium production cycle, achieving the almost complete elimination of greenhouse gas emissions because oxygen is released instead of carbon dioxide; in combination with the use of renewable hydroelectric energy for electrolysis, the technology ensures that primary aluminium from Krasnoyarsk has a very low carbon footprint.

The verification was conducted in 2023 in accordance with the specifications of ISO 14067:2018 “Greenhouse gases – Carbon footprint of products – Requirements and guidelines for quantification”, as well as other internationally recognized standards, including the InterGovernment Panel on Climate Change and the International Aluminum Institute.

As is known, the carbon footprint of products is becoming an increasingly important factor in guiding market choices, the communication of data on the carbon footprint of products has in fact become a mandatory requirement and increasingly requested in many markets; and it is in this direction that the main global companies using metals are moving, demanding increasingly rigorous assurances from suppliers regarding issues of climate and environmental responsibility.

The Krasnoyarsk smelter has already produced several thousand tons of ALLOW INERTA aluminum at the new pilot plant, which have been regularly delivered to consumers for use.
