The aluminium industry fettered by bureaucracy

Europe’s aluminium industry is going through a particularly complex phase, where global challenges related to energy, supply chains and geopolitics are compounded by an increasingly critical factor: growing regulatory and bureaucratic pressure.

As highlighted in the editorial by FACE Secretary General Mario Conserva, published in the latest issue of A&L Alluminio e Leghe, many small and medium-sized companies in the sector are now operating in an environment marked by high costs, supply chain uncertainty, continued tariffs on primary aluminium imports, and a fragmented and often unclear regulatory framework.

Key dossiers such as CBAM, trade policies and sanctions regimes show how the dialogue between industry and bureaucracy has become increasingly complex. This situation creates instability, discourages investment and disproportionately affects downstream operators and SMEs, which form the backbone of Europe’s aluminium value chain.

At such a delicate moment, FACE reiterates the need for more coherent and pragmatic industrial policies, capable of combining competitiveness, supply security and the energy transition, without adding further obstacles to a sector already under significant pressure. The future of Europe’s aluminium industry also depends on the ability to simplify rules, listen to industry and build a regulatory framework that is genuinely aligned with industrial reality.
