War against Iran: Qatar suspends gas production. Potential impact on Qatalum aluminium production
The recent announcement by QatarEnergy regarding the suspension of LNG production and certain downstream products — including aluminium, urea, polymers and methanol — brings a fundamental issue for the global aluminium value chain back into focus: energy.
Aluminium is one of the most strategic metals for the energy and industrial transition, but it is also extremely energy-intensive. Primary aluminium production requires enormous amounts of electricity, which represents one of the main competitiveness factors for the entire sector.
In the Gulf region, where some of the world’s most important aluminium production hubs are located, this electricity is largely generated by gas-fired power plants. QatarEnergy supplies gas to Hydro’s joint venture, Qatalum. The specific implications for aluminium production at Qatalum are currently unclear, and Hydro is seeking further information.
QatarEnergy’s decision highlights how closely the aluminium sector is linked to the security and stability of energy supplies. In a global context characterised by geopolitical tensions and the energy transition, access to competitive energy remains one of the key elements for the future of the aluminium industry.
