The EU should fully liberalise, incentivise and expand – not restrict – imports of low carbon primary aluminium as a dual tool to support both competitiveness and decarbonisation.

We have a massive and ever growing deficit of primary aluminium, no new smelters are envisaged in Europe in the foreseeable future, recycling could at best help with half the demand, we already need to attract 8 million tons of primary aluminium annually into the EU.

Why overpay billions for our raw material because of outdated import tariffs? Why restrict supplies of low carbon aluminium when we are so much in need of them?
