Raw aluminium in the European Union: focus on recycling and secondary metal

In the new article published in A&L Alluminio e Leghe, Mario Conserva explores the strategic role of aluminium recovery and recycling through an interview with Maurizio Sala, Vice President of Amafond and FACE, who participated in the meeting at the European Commission’s DG TRADE focused on safeguarding aluminium scrap in Europe.

As highlighted by Maurizio Sala, recycling is now an essential resource for European industry: reusing aluminium requires only 5% of the energy needed for primary production and helps preserve a strategic raw material that should remain within the European industrial circuit.

At a time when the EU has lost a large share of its primary aluminium production capacity and remains heavily dependent on imports, FACE reiterates the need to strengthen recovery, innovation and protection of aluminium scrap, while limiting the outflow of valuable materials to non-EU countries. Ensuring competitiveness, security of supply and industrial resilience today means investing concretely in the circular economy of aluminium.
