Mario Conserva (FACE): “Scrap is a strategic resource. Europe cannot afford to lose it”

FACE Secretary General Mario Conserva was a guest on Sky TG24 Business to discuss the impact of the new US tariffs on aluminium, which are having significant consequences across the entire European value chain.

During the interview, Conserva highlighted that Europe currently produces only 15% of the primary metal required to sustain its downstream industry, posing a serious threat to the competitiveness of European companies. In this context, secondary aluminium plays an increasingly crucial role, yet the growing “scrap rush” driven by the United States – enabled by lower tariffs on recycled material – is depriving Europe of a strategic resource and driving prices up.

Conserva reiterated that the EU must act swiftly to limit scrap losses and ensure adequate availability for the European industrial system, which is already heavily reliant on imports of primary metal.

FACE will continue to bring to the attention of EU institutions the need for effective policies to safeguard the aluminium value chain and secure a competitive and sustainable future for Europe’s aluminium industry.
