The European aluminium industry in the global area

The European aluminium industry is undergoing a profound transformation, shaped by rising global demand, the energy transition and an increasingly complex geopolitical environment. In this context, Europe is facing structural challenges that affect the competitiveness of the value chain, starting with its strong dependence on imports of primary aluminium, high energy costs and growing tensions over access to raw materials.

In one of his latest article published in A&L Alluminio e Leghe Magazine, FACE Secretary General Mario Conserva analyses the role of the European aluminium industry in the global arena, highlighting both the strengths of Europe’s downstream sector and the vulnerabilities of a system that risks being weakened by fragmented and uncoordinated industrial and trade policies.

Particular attention is given to recycling, which represents a strategic lever for Europe in terms of both industrial competitiveness and environmental sustainability. However, in order to fully harness this potential, it is essential to ensure fair market conditions, retain secondary raw materials within the Union and support investment across the entire value chain.

As underlined in the article, strengthening the European aluminium identity requires a long-term industrial vision capable of combining security of supply, the green transition and strategic autonomy. FACE will continue to promote this approach in its dialogue with European institutions and all stakeholders across the value chain.
